Preamp and Small-Signal Tubes
A guitar pickup, microphone, radio detector, or phono cartridge produces a signal far too small to drive a loudspeaker directly. Small-signal tubes raise that signal to a useful voltage before later stages supply power.
12AX7 / ECC83
The 12AX7 is one of the most familiar guitar-amplifier preamp tubes. It contains two high-gain triodes in one nine-pin envelope. The European designation ECC83 is closely associated with the same general tube family.
A 12AX7 stage can provide substantial voltage gain but relatively modest plate current. That makes it suitable for input gain, tone-control recovery, overdrive stages, oscillators, and phase-inverter circuits.
12AT7 and 12AU7
The 12AT7 and 12AU7 use the same general dual-triode package style but have different gain, current, and plate-resistance characteristics. They are not merely lower- or higher-quality versions of a 12AX7.

Gain is not only the tube
The actual voltage gain of a stage depends on the tube, plate resistor, cathode resistor, bypass capacitor, following load, supply voltage, and bias point. Replacing one tube type with another can therefore change current, headroom, distortion, and frequency response rather than simply changing “gain.”
Cathode bypass capacitor
A cathode resistor creates local negative feedback. Adding a capacitor across that resistor reduces the AC feedback above the capacitor's effective corner frequency, increasing gain. The capacitor value can therefore shape the frequency response of a guitar stage.
Grid stopper
A resistor placed close to the control-grid pin can reduce parasitic oscillation and limit very high-frequency current. Grid-stopper resistors are common in guitar amplifiers even though they may not visibly affect ordinary audio-frequency gain.
Miller capacitance
Capacitance between grid and plate is multiplied by voltage gain when viewed from the input. This Miller effect can strongly influence the high-frequency response of high-gain triode stages.
Microphonics
A vacuum tube is a mechanical structure. Electrodes can vibrate, and those movements can modulate current. A microphonic preamp tube can make taps on the chassis or loudspeaker vibration audible through the amplifier.
Noise
Small-signal tubes can produce thermal noise, shot noise, hum pickup, leakage, and intermittent contact noise. Input stages are especially sensitive because their noise is amplified by every stage that follows.
