Article 450
Article 450 addresses transformer protection, installation, ventilation, location, and requirements that vary with transformer type and application.
Overcurrent protection
Primary and secondary protection are coordinated with transformer rating, conductor size, voltage, transformer type, and the applicable NEC rules. A table value or transformer nameplate alone is not the whole calculation.
Secondary conductors
A primary breaker does not necessarily protect a small secondary conductor against every overload condition. Secondary conductor length, physical protection, and placement of the secondary overcurrent device therefore receive special attention.
Separately derived systems
An isolation transformer with no direct electrical connection between primary and secondary can create a separately derived system. Grounding and bonding then require the Article 250 rules for the system bonding jumper, grounding electrode conductor, equipment grounding conductors, and neutral.
Ventilation and working space
Transformers make heat normally. Ventilation openings must remain clear and the unit must be installed according to its listing and manufacturer instructions. Required working space and accessibility also matter.
Autotransformers
Because primary and secondary share a winding, an autotransformer does not create an isolated separately derived system merely by changing voltage.
Class 2 control transformers
Doorbells, HVAC controls, access systems, and similar equipment may use listed Class 2 power sources. The classification depends on the complete listed source and protection—not simply on low output voltage.
