Recipe #12 — zener-diode voltage regulator

A zener diode can hold a small-load voltage near a chosen value when it is used with a series resistor.

Follow the current: the series resistor limits current from the 12 V source. The load and the reverse-biased zener share the regulated output node.

Why R1 is necessary

The zener does not simply get connected across a 12 V source by itself. R1 limits the current and drops the excess voltage.

Another way to think of it

The zener acts like a pressure-relief path for voltage. As the output tries to rise above its zener region, the diode conducts more strongly and helps hold the node near its rated voltage.

Simple, but not magical

Regulation is only maintained while the source voltage, load current, zener current, and device power stay within a useful range. Zener and resistor power ratings matter.
