This is a typical looking resistor. The bands of color are used to indicate some of the specifications of the resistor. Size is also used as a visual indicator of the resistors power rating. The wires coming from either end are called "leads" or "lead wires". There is no polarity as in some two lead parts such as some capacitors or diodes. (You can turn this part around and it will still work the same.) In use, resistors give off heat and in some cases can become hot enough to burn you if you touch them.
